Czarne Publishers was established at the end of 1996. This small, independent publishing house specializes in contemporary Polish prose and poetry of superior artistic merit, as well as in Central European authors. We also have a particular interest in essays on Central European history and culture. So far, Czarne has issued 28 titles, seven of which have received literary prizes and nominations.

In 1997 and 1998, the Raczyński Library awarded prizes to Zygmunt Haupt’s Paper Ring and Andrzej Stasiuk’s Dukla. In 1998 and 1999, the Foundation of Culture awarded prizes to Krzysztof Varga’s 45 Ideas for a Novel and Krzysztof Siwczyk’s Emil and Us. Furthermore, Marcin Świetlicki’s Songs of the Profane and Andrzej Stasiuk’s Across the River and Dukla were nominated for the Nike Literary Prize, and How I Became a Writer, also by Stasiuk, received the Machiner, awarded by the monthly magazine Machina.
